At approximately at 6:15PM the Covington Police Department, received a 911 emergency call about a possible breaking and entering in the 300 Block of East Prospect Street that resulted in a possible shooting.

Officers responded to the scene within minutes and immediately it became clear to the first officers on the scene that a shooting occurred at a residence.

The officers called for medical attention while securing the scene.

The shooting resulted with two victims, who received gunshot wounds —one individual was fatally wounded at the scene and the other was transported to an area hospital for life-threatening injuries.

At this time, there is a suspect in custody — 26 year old, Kurell M. Wallace, who has been charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held in the Alleghany Regional Jail.

“Again we as a community are saddened by the events that occurred last night. Covington prides itself on being a family oriented and close knit community, so when something like this occurs, it impacts us all,” said Covington Police Chief Chris Smith.

Currently the Covington Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation in conjunction with the Virginia State Police.

Covington police are also being assisted by the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office.

“At this time we are working to determine what occurred and believe this was an isolated incident, Chief Smith added. “Should you have any information regarding this matter, we encourage you to contact (540) 965-6333.”
